Physical Education at Bankside Primary School

At Bankside Primary, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, inclusive PE curriculum that engages every child from the Foundation Stage through to Upper Key Stage 2. Our provision is centred around Real PE, a unique child-focused approach that promotes fundamental movement skills and develops the whole child.

Real PE: A Child-Centred Approach

Real PE is structured around six learning cogs that support holistic development:

  • Physical – building core movement skills and physical confidence
  • Social – encouraging teamwork, communication, and collaboration
  • Creative – fostering imagination and innovation in movement
  • Personal – promoting resilience, independence, and self-belief
  • Cognitive – developing problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Health and Fitness – instilling lifelong habits for wellbeing

This framework ensures every child experiences success and enjoyment in physical activity. It directly supports Ofsted’s focus on quality of education, ensuring progression, accessibility, and ambition for all learners.

Specialist Coaching and Partnerships

We supplement our PE curriculum with expert coaching and partnerships:

  • Jason Robinson Foundation – delivering specialist coaching to Year 6 pupils.
  • Yorkshire Cricket Board – providing cricket sessions for Year 4 and Reception (Spring 1, 2026).
  • Northern Contemporary Dance School – offering specialised lunchtime dance classes.

These partnerships enrich our curriculum, broaden pupils’ experiences, and demonstrate our commitment to personal development and cultural capital, key aspects of the Ofsted framework.

After-School Sports Clubs

Our after-school programme offers a wide range of activities, including:

  • Multi-skills
  • Dodgeball
  • Cricket
  • Tag Rugby
  • Football
  • Girls-only Football
  • Girls-only Cricket
  • Karate

We work closely with parents and pupils to shape our club offer, ensuring it reflects the interests of our community. This promotes pupil voice, engagement, and positive attitudes to learning, aligning with Ofsted’s emphasis on behaviour and attitudes.

City-Wide Sporting Events

Through the Leeds Well School Partnership, our pupils take part in exciting events such as:

  • Sports Hall Athletics
  • Dodgeball tournaments
  • Football competitions
  • Canoeing and kayaking
  • Gymnastics
  • Ice skating
  • SEND-inclusive sporting events

These opportunities allow children to represent the school, build confidence, and celebrate sporting achievement beyond the classroom. They contribute to Ofsted’s judgement on personal development, particularly in building resilience, confidence, and character.

Lunchtime Activities and Play Leaders

Active lunchtimes provide further opportunities for participation, including:

  • Big Games in the MUGA (team sports led by staff)
  • Skipping and hula-hooping
  • Basketball games
  • Balance activities
  • A variety of other fun challenges

Our Year 5/6 Play Leaders play a vital role in facilitating these activities, working alongside staff to encourage participation and teamwork. This supports Ofsted’s focus on leadership and management, showing how pupils are empowered to take responsibility and contribute positively to school life.

How PE Links to the Ofsted Framework

  • Quality of Education – Real PE ensures progression, inclusivity, and ambition for all pupils.
  • Behaviour and Attitudes – Clubs, lunchtime activities, and Playleaders promote positive behaviour, teamwork, and respect.
  • Personal Development – Specialist coaching, city-wide events, and diverse opportunities build resilience, confidence, and cultural capital.
  • Leadership and Management – Strong partnerships and pupil leadership roles demonstrate effective strategic planning and community engagement.

At Bankside Primary, PE is more than physical activity – it is about developing confident, resilient, and creative learners who value health, fitness, and collaboration. We are proud to provide an inclusive and ambitious PE curriculum that ensures every child thrives, fully aligned with the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework.
