Latest Learning 2026-2027
16.10.26 -
This week in Nursery, we have been developing our independence during snack time. At the beginning of the week, we practised pouring our own milk and, by the end of the week, we had progressed to preparing our own food!
Today, we made delicious sandwiches. We chose our ingredients and practised spreading butter and jam all by ourselves. Some of us even had a go at slicing cheese.
We were so excited to enjoy our creations at snack time! Snack time already provides a valuable learning opportunity in Nursery, and by encouraging more independence, we have developed skills across lots of areas of the curriculum. Preparing our own food helps to strengthen the small muscles in our hands, builds confidence and self-esteem, learn to follow instructions and take turns, and provides a wonderful opportunity for conversation.
Most importantly, it was lots of fun and we felt very proud of what we had achieved.

09.10.26 - Communication and Language!
This half term, we have been developing our speaking skills by learning how to use simple subject-verb sentences through Colourful Semantics activities. The children have been practising putting words together to describe who is doing an action, helping them to build confidence when speaking in full sentences.
During key person time, we have been looking at photographs of ourselves playing in the provision and talking about what is happening in each picture. The children have enjoyed describing their own actions and those of their friends using simple sentences such as, "Habiba is cooking" or "Ayaan is painting." These discussions have helped to develop vocabulary, sentence structure and confidence when talking in a group.
We have also been playing an exciting dice game to learn new verbs. After rolling the dice, the children race to act out the verb they land on before using it in a sentence. This has been a fun way to introduce new action words and encourage the children to use them in their everyday conversations.
In the small world area, adults have been modelling simple sentences using a variety of verbs during play. The children have heard and practised sentences such as "Mummy is cooking," "Baby is playing," and "Daddy is driving," helping them to hear and use different action words in meaningful contexts.

After half term, we will begin short and playful Colourful Semantics sessions within our key groups. These activities will continue to support the children's speaking skills, helping them to develop longer sentences, learn new vocabulary and become confident speakers.
25.09.26 - Maths!
Maths has been popping up all over our provision this week!
In our messy play, the children have been busy making playdough. They measured out cups of ingredients, counted scoops and checked whether their scoops were full to the top. There was lots of discussion about quantities and making sure the playdough was the right consistency.
Outside, we discovered a tape measure, which led to lots of exploring and investigating. The children compared their heights, talking about who was taller, and then measured different things around our outdoor area. We have been encouraging the children to use mathematical language, practising words such as taller and longer instead of simply saying bigger.
It's been lovely to see the children using maths naturally through their play and explorations!

18.09.26 - Reading!
Our book corner has become a cosy haven for us to snuggle up in. We have been loving the chance to slow down, get comfortable and cosy with our favourite stories. Whether we are sharing a book with a friend, listening to an adult read a story or just have chance to relax and look at the pictures in the book.
Books are not only in our reading corner, we make sure to have them in each area of provision to inspire conversations about the world around us. This week we have been looking at a book in the home corner and pretending to write their shopping lists. We have had books about different types of houses in the construction corner and have used this as inspiration for our fantastic models!
As well as books, we have introduced musical instruments directly into our reading corner. This is helping us develop crucial listening skills as we embark on our Super Sounds programme!

11.09.26 - Welcome Back to School!
It has been so wonderful to have Nursery back after the Summer, with some familiar faces returning and some lovely new ones joining us. The children have settled beautifully into their first week, and it has been a joy to have the room filled with giggles, chatter, and busy hands. Nursery have been learning the routines, making friends, and exploring all the different areas of the classroom. We have been painting pictures, building sandcastles, and baking yummy cakes for our friends in the home corner. We cannot wait to see where the rest of the year takes us!

22.05.26 - Understanding The World!
Continuing our work on caterpillars and simple life cycles, the excitement in Nursery was skyhigh on
Monday when we discovered that our caterpillars had transformed into cocoons! The children used
magnifying glasses to look closely and shared wonderful observations about what they could see:
“He’s wrapped himself up in his house.”
“The cocoon is in the story.”
“He will turn into a beautiful butterfly.”
We used our storybook to help us remember our key word, cocoon, and talked about what happens during
this stage of the life cycle.
Later in the week, during our Key Person sessions, we acted out the life cycle of a butterfly, creating
actions for each stage. Outside, the children played a corners game to help them remember the four key
parts: egg, caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly. Their enthusiasm and growing understanding have been a
joy to see.

15.05.26 - Expressive Arts and Design!
This week, our Expressive Arts and Design focus has been all about drawing skills - and what better inspiration than the caterpillars we’ve been observing in our classroom and in the story we’ve been enjoying together.
The children carefully selected the correct colours to represent their caterpillar drawings. Some chose greens, while others opted for blacks. They began by drawing clear circular shapes, then added thoughtful details such as legs and eyes.
It has been wonderful to see how confidently our Nursery 2 children now approach observational drawing. Their progress since joining us is remarkable and is preparing them beautifully as they begin their transition into Reception.

01.05.26 - Physical Development!
We’ve been having such a great time outdoors lately, especially with our brand new digging area. Nursery have
absolutely loved getting stuck in, using their muscles to dig through the soil and hunt for the ‘treasure’ we’ve hidden
underneath! All that digging, scooping, lifting, helps build strength in our arms, hands, and core and these are the
muscles we’ll rely on for things holding a pencil for writing and even getting ourselves dressed. We’ll keep adding new
treasures and challenges to keep the fun going.
If your child comes home talking about digging for buried treasure, you’ll know why!
